How to Dress for Your Body Type

Knowing your body type is the first step towards looking fabulous and feeling confident in your clothes. As your personal stylist, I am here to guide you in finding the right pieces that fit your unique shape. In this post, we will discuss the five basic body types and what to wear based on each one.

Rectangle Body Type

The rectangle body type is characterized by a straight, narrow silhouette. Here are some tips on how to add curves to your figure:

  • Choose tops and bottoms that cinch at the waist to create the illusion of curves.
  • Add volume to your bust and hips with ruffles, pleats, and gathers.
  • Emphasize your legs with heels or boots that elongate your legs.
  • Avoid anything too boxy or shapeless, as it will make you look like a rectangle.
  • Also avoid anything too tight, as it will be uncomfortable and unflattering.

Inverted Triangle Body Type

The inverted triangle body type is characterized by wider shoulders than hips. Here are some tips on how to balance your proportions:

  • Choose tops that add volume to your hips, such as A-line skirts, ruffled skirts, and peplum tops.
  • Pair your tops with bottoms that are fitted or flared at the waist, such as straight-leg jeans, pencil skirts, and wide-leg pants.
  • Emphasize your legs with heels or boots that elongate your legs.
  • Avoid anything too tight or revealing in the upper half of your body.
  • Also avoid anything too baggy, as it will make you look frumpy.

The hourglass body type is characterized by a well-defined waistline and a proportionate top and bottom part of the body. Here are some tips on what to wear to accentuate your curves:

  • V-necklines will draw attention to your bust.
  • Sheath dresses and body-con skirts will hug your curves in all the right places.
  • Peplum tops and belted jackets will add definition to your waist.
  • Avoid anything too loose or baggy, as it will make you look boxy.
  • Also avoid anything too tight, as it will be uncomfortable and unflattering.
